I love trees. A lot. Even though I knew it was inevitable, it was devastating to see all the mature ash trees along South Barstow Street come down on the first day of construction. It just looks super weird down there now, and startlingly so. All the buildings fully exposed, the sky wide open and sun drenching it all. It even sounds different. Of course, new trees will be planted upon the street project’s completion later this summer, but we all know they won’t amount to much for several years yet. And it’s the same thing in Owen Park where some of EC’s most impressive woodwork once stood – it’s now cleared out as they clean up the soil and take that park in new directions. Over here by the Volume One office and Local Store on Galloway and Dewey, we finally got a couple of Imperial Honeylocusts planted next to our building after last fall’s construction, and I’m pretty excited about it. No matter where you put them, trees just add so much more dimension to the streetscape. It’s funny how much these common things – trees – hundreds of thousands of which are around us every day, make such a difference in our daily lives. Yet we often barely notice them. (And that probably holds true for a lot of things.) So now as we collectively mourn the loss of Barstow’s canopy, we wait with baited breath for the new crop of more diverse varieties. And while they’ll be small to start, all good things are. And with ample nurturing, may the community grow right along with them.
