Harlem Globetrotters bring hoop hijinks to North High

The invisible dribble always fools the Generals.
The ol' invisible hover dribble always fools the Generals.

My grandmother had an old adage that I remembered recently: You haven’t lived until you’ve seen a man simultaneously break dance and dribble a basketball up and down the court before sinking a half-court hook shot. Well, if that’s true, there’s going to be a whole lot of living going on April 11 at North High School when the Harlem Globetrotters come into town. The trick basketball squad (fresh off a trip to North Korea with Dennis Rodman) will entertain you endlessly with their dribbling, shooting, and passing prowess, as well as a number of comedy routines during the game. New to this tour, the Globetrotters are allowing fans to pick a new rule to add to the game: a choice among having two basketballs on the court, double points, a four-point shot from nearly half court, a penalty box, or pitting five Globetrotters against six opponents. Audience members can vote online when they purchase their tickets. Along with a ticket, fans can also purchase some pre-game, on-court time with the team, perfect for a young basketball player. The Globetrotters are a cultural icon, founded in 1927 in Chicago (seriously, Chicago, not Harlem). Since then the teams have toured the world, spreading their special brand of sports comedy and entertainment as well as the sport of basketball. The current team features men and women from around the world, but no players from Wisconsin. Maybe their trip will inspire a future globetrotter right here in Eau Claire! Tickets are available at HarlemGlobetrotters.com.
