Shared Work Means Shared Veggies at Community Garden

It may still feel a bit like winter, but the calendar says it’s spring, and that means gardening season is just around the corner. If you don’t have a spot to garden on your own property, or you’d just rather garden collaboratively, you can become part of the Forest Street Community Garden. Organizers are now accepting applications for membership in the Shared Volunteer Garden. Two membership drives are planned from 4:30-6:30pm on Monday, April 1, and Monday, April 22, at the Eau Claire Community Table, 320 Putnam St. Community members who are interested in exercising their green thumbs can come and learn about garden membership, fill out applications, and help plant vegetable seeds that are being started indoors. While all 50 individual plots at the community garden are already rented, community members can still get involved with the shared garden. “Members of the Forest St. Community Garden are welcome to participate in weekly gardening sessions as often as preferred. When produce is ready and available, members who volunteer during gardening sessions have access to high-quality organic produce after each session,” said Kerri Kiernan, one of the garden’s coordinators. Individual memberships are $10, while family memberships are $20. Members get access to the shared garden, which is maintained by about 50 members. Extra produced is donated to the Community Table. To get an application or to learn more, attend one of the forums or email eauclairecommunitygarden@gmail.com.
