5 Popular Dog Breeds for Families

Allison Schrader |

Not sure which pooch is the prime pick for your family? There’s lots to consider before adding a furry member to your household. Every family is different and so is every breed. Here’s a short list of five popular dog breeds for families. Even though these descriptions help portray the general personalities and needs of these breeds, please remember that every dog needs training to bring out their best.

1. Golden Retriever

This attractive breed with its long, flowing blonde locks has made many American families happy over the years. Known as one of the animal kingdom’s most loyal canines, a Golden Retriever will quickly attach himself to the family. Goldies mesh well with active, outdoorsy families. Outdoor fun like fetching, swimming, and hunting are some of this dog’s favorite activities. They also rank at the top of the affection meter, making them a great selection for families.

2. Beagle

The term “puppy dog eyes” possibly stems from this dog’s adorable face. The beagle’s sweet and innocent – almost sad – facial expression has the ability to warm even the coldest of hearts. They are known for their gentle disposition and distinctive bark. Beagles are not an ideal choice for families who are often away from home; these pups crave human contact and tend to suffer from separation anxiety. Overall though, beagles are excellent companions for children.

3. Newfoundland

Perhaps nothing better describes this breed than the title “gentle giant.” This large breed may look intimidating, but don’t let their size fool you. Their sweet and loving nature will bring lots of love to the family. Newfoundlands bond very closely with the humans nearest to them, a bond that can sometimes be life-saving, as Newfoundlands have a history of rescuing people. They are protective without being aggressive, making them a good match with kids.

4. Bichon Frise

This may be one of the ultimate lapdogs of the canine world. Cute, cuddly, and cheerful, the Bichon Frise is an excellent addition to nearly an family. Their pleasant demeanor can almost be detected on their smiling faces as they happily bounce around. No need to worry about the yapping little dog syndrome; this breed tends to keep quiet unless danger is afoot. The Bichon Frise is very friendly and playful, a perfect companion for your little ones.

5. Labrador Retriever

As one of America’s most popular dog breeds, the Labrador Retriever has made a name for himself over the last century. Whether they come in yellow, black, or chocolate, Labs are eager to please, intelligent, energetic, loyal, and affectionate. What else could a family ask for? Labs need a lot of exercise and enjoy being outdoors. Because of attachment to their human companions, Labs are another breed that can suffer from behavioral problems and separation anxiety if left alone for too long. Some individuals of the breed may also be hyperactive, so keep this in mind if you have small children living at home.
