“The image 'Spitfire' combines my love of vintage transportation and my enduring dream to fly off in old fashioned style. Over the ages, we have come up some fantastical modes of motion and the pedal plane and the bicycle are easily two of my favorites. I have always wanted to zoom off in a pedal powered plane and the thought of being able to do so always hits me while I’m riding around on my own vintage bicycle. Like most childhood dreams, this image began simply enough in my sketchbook and then demanded that I give it more attention. I wanted to keep this image simple, joyous, and full of nostalgia." – The Artist – The Artist

What we were thinking: “Sarah Denis had inquired about doing some illustrating for us, and we enjoyed this piece from her portfolio so much that we had to use it for our cover. The design has a vintage aesthetic with a feminine touch and conveys the dream of how the artist has always wanted to fly. The color that juts out from the linear outlines immediately indicates that this piece was done by hand and has a playful summertime look and feel. The sky possesses great breathing room for the masthead and the old plane gives this piece the effect of motion.”
