Talking with Cory “Fathom” Crowell is always an adventure. He is a man of many words and stories, a street poet with a vivid imagination and a penchant for heart-filled lyricism and witty social banter. Fathom fans have been following through a career that has spanned seven years of raw, emotional performances and recordings that have to be witnessed in person to fully understand. In an era where rappers release an album a month and recycle rhymes, Fathom has taken a three-year hiatus between releases to give us Shark Beach Party, an album that shows a more mature artist breezing over polished production and having fun with himself, something that was missed on his previous offerings. Recorded with the help of Mr. Pizzy, Fathom goes over beats from LC Slak, Patti B, Botzy, and JP. An often overlooked aspect of our genre is beat selection (see Nas or Mac Miller on opposite ends) and on this project he chooses a nice blend of party tracks and smooth beats that give his vocals room to breathe while accentuating one of the most unique voices in hip-hop. Come celebrate with Wooge, Frozen Tundra, DJ Bluepauly2, and myself at the “FML One-Show Tour” as they support Fathom as well as his Rage Against the Machine cover band at the House of Rock on Aug. 13. Find the album at the show or The Local Store. The last thing I asked Cory to tell me was why people should check out Fathom and he said “Because I’m better than Breakneck the Mage.” Can you say shots fired?
