Hashbrown Heaven is the first in a series of illustrations based on John’s admiration for 1950s-'60s roadside commercial signage. Referencing photos taken during his travels, John attempts to distill and simplify the various elements that comprise the sign’s design, including the 3 dimensional shapes, neon lighting, and hand painted typography. John’s childhood interest in paint-by-number also influences the style of this series. The heavenly hashbrowns are served at Bob’s Grill in downtown Chetek, Wis.

What we were thinking: “We discovered Hashbrown Heaven at this year's Arts West exhibit. As the piece was displayed during the winter months, anticipation grew amongst Volume One staff, knowing this retro signage would make a great cover choice for a summertime issue. Intricate detail within the fluorescent light bulbs, spot on shadowing, and overall composition make this piece a fantastic, eye-catching marvel. The designer's choice for a tight cropping really lets this old sign stand out and grab your attention.” – V1 Designer Josh Smeltzer
