When you get a press package and see a photo like this one, it makes you curious. When you see that this duo includes a wife who plays a cigar-box guitar and a husband who plays kick drum, guitar, harmonica, and high-hat ... at the same time, you’re fully interested. And when you hear music like this, you’re straight-up floored. This raw-sounding and stripped-down group (with the stage names Wayne Waxing and Lucy Tight) shreds a blend of blues, rock, and punk all their own. On tour to promote their album Lucy and Wayne and the Amairican Stream, this quirky couple comes with a huge Bambi Airstream trailer, their toddler daughter, a big ole black Lab, and their stage act includes a weird slideshow of retro images. When they were part of the long-time Philadelphia folk project Maggi, Pierce, and EJ, Volume One’s very own editor Nick Meyer followed them for a few weeks for a documentary. And he says, “The best part about them is they’re genuine musicians. And they’re gonna be musicians their entire lives, regardless of how successful they are.” Awesome.
