“This body of work focuses on the spring wakening of the Tulip. This spring-flowering bulbous perennial caused frenzy during the 1630’s, known as “Tulipomania”. My artwork is a tribute to the fortunes won and lost during this unusual time. I prepare my paper surfaces through a series of complex steps and timing is crucial. The paper is placed outdoors in pre-spring, covered with a mixture of snow and natural pigments. As the temperatures warm and the snows melt, the pigments and water stain the papers, creating interesting patterns. I then collect the sheets and draw the exotic blooms using soft pastels. I place the paper back out in the elements so that nature has the final hand in developing the work.” – The Artist

What we were thinking: “Tullips ... they are everywhere this time of year. Combine this law of spring with the amazing hand crafted rendering of one of these floral phenoms, and you have yourself the makings of a great cover. The patient process of preparing the pulp pre-spring for natural pigments to permeate into the paper for the perplexing pastel work is what sets Debra D'Souza art from the rest. Most artists will just go to a near by craft store and pick up scrap book paper for unique textures but since this is a one shot deal, every piece is very unique. We discovered this body of work at the Eau Claire Regional Arts Center in downtown Eau Claire. For more samples of Debra's work check out her website at Debradsouza.com.” – V1 Designer Josh Smeltzer
