“I shot this photo on a recent trip to Gilman, Wis. It struck me so profoundly to see so many people manually taking on this massive project of re-siding their barn. It was refreshing to see that this level of dedication is still given to the family farm, a lifestyle that seems to be rapidly becoming a thing of the past in many areas of the country. This photo was also taken on Day 94 of my personal Project 365, A challenge I’ve given myself to take one photo every single day for 365 days. It’s a goal that is helping me to better find the beauty in every day and create a ‘visual journal’ of my life and things that inspire me. www.oliveinspired.blogspot.com– The Artist

What we were thinking: Barn was chosen for this cover as it depicts men working on a structure that is common to the area. This strong visual element – created by the shape of the barn – has a sharp point on top of the ridge line directing the viewer's eye to the Volume One masthead. At first glance the viewer deduces they can relate to the imagery and that its associated with Volume One magazine. As the reader leans over to snag an issue, more details are revealed within the photograph – such as what task each man is currently working on, the details in the barn and the hay, and the list goes on. All these visual elements play a big role in making the cover eye-catching, all while keeping a local aesthetic.” – V1 Designer Josh Smeltzer
