PROFESSOR GETS AWARD FOR RECYCLED JEANS GARMENT

A Stout professor created a jacket and skirt combination that recently won the Sandra Hutton Award for Fiber Arts at the annual International Textiles and Apparel Association meeting. Kim Hahn of the apparel and communications technology department was inspired by the hanbok, a Korean garment. Using six pairs of recycled jeans with different color gradients, the Indigo Cross Hatch was created by weaving half-inch rectangles together – a process difficult to replicate. The meeting and fashion show that modeled Hahn’s creation were held in Montreal, Quebec.

UWEC HOLDS HAIKU CONTEST

As a fun and relaxed way to promote writing at the end of a busy semester, the University Writing Center at UW-Eau Claire is playing host to “Literary smarts: a Seasonal Haiku Contest.”  Anyone from the community can submit up to four poems that adhere to the 5-7-5 syllabic formula until Dec. 3, as long as they take on themes of spring, summer, fall, or winter. So get in the seasonal mood of your choice and start counting syllables! Entries can be submitted electronically via www.uwec.edu/writing and winning writers will be notified sometime during the Spring 2011 semester. Prizes will include t-shirts and more.
