Some fishing-based hijinks out at Fanny Hill.

On Golden Pond, the touching comedy about marriage, family dynamics, and the lasting power of love is currently running at Fanny Hill Dinner Theatre. The 1981 film inspired the play, written by Ernest Thompson. The story follows the retired lives of Norman and Ethel Thayer as they spend their summer months at their quiet Maine cabin alongside Golden Pond. The effervescent killjoy, Norman, leads the story, with his quick-witted banter and clever sarcasm. After 48 years of marriage, Norman and Ethel find themselves at the intersection between remembrance for the past and the acceptance of aging and death. As Norman continues to lose his memory, his strained relationship with his daughter surfaces – leading to regret, sorrow, and eventual understanding. Don Hoggins steals the stage, as his portrayal of Norman is both irreverent and comically genius. Hoggins has served as the executive director at Fanny Hill since 1980 and has since directed 142 productions and acted in 117 shows. His co-star, Leslie Norris, is also endearing as Ethel, with the chemistry between the two being one of the most notable features of the production. With a charming set design and intimate setting, audience members will feel as though they are right in Ethel and Norman’s living room. Although the themes do cater to older couples, diverse audiences can appreciate the humor and commentary on the fragility of a family.
