Minneapolis electronic duo makes local stop on tour

Ian Jacoby |

Minneapolis duo Lookbook features former local Maggie Morrison.

Lookbook is a collaboration between Grant Cutler and Maggie Morrison (notably from electro-pop group Digitata). Their album, True to Form, is a mixture of three parts Madonna and two parts Phoenix, a celebration of all things party-related. This is dance music in its purest form. Morrison’s now-famous croon dirties up the songs from front to back, and Cutler’s beats cut through your stereo system with urgency. Already a mainstay in the Twin Cities, this electronic duo is about to embark on an east coast tour that will see them playing dates in Philly, Brooklyn, and … Menomonie? Yes, it’s true; Stout’s track record of excellence extends itself even further by booking a band known for bringing the party. And when I say party, I mean party. Lookbook’s music evokes the best parts of a John Hughes movie. There’s exuberance and an essence of youth here alongside the crunching bass lines and synth leads. These feelings only intensify in Lookbook’s live show, where Cutler and Morrison’s bobbing heads incite the equivalent of a dance riot. I can’t recommend this show enough. Also opening is fellow Minneapolis group, To Kill a Petty Bourgeoisie, who walks a fine line between noise and ambience.
