Ending Summer with a Thrash

These guys are not happy about being stuck in an elevator.

The summertime is pregnant with anniversaries: weddings, birthdays, other significant life moments. And 2009 holds a very significant anniversary for local mainstream metal merchants, No Loving Place. Their germination began 10 years ago. And if you, like me, are loathe to let go of summer, you can squeeze in one final celebration when No Loving Place headlines at the House of Rock a few days shy of the autumnal equinox. I recently spoke with guitarist/founding member Rick St. Germaine about a decade’s worth of musical mayhem. “It has been a lot of fun. We’ve met great people, been to some really great places. The band has been the constant throughout our lives. We feel pretty fortunate to have been able to bang out original songs for a decade.” NLP have always been a guilty pleasure for this metal fan. Their earlier milque toast approach to metal has pleasantly evolved into something far heavier and aggressive, though without sacrificing the accessibility that has made their name throughout the Midwest. And, collectively, their metal stock is above reproach. As fellow teenagers of the late 80s/early 90s, they cut their teeth listening to the serrated styling of bands like Autopsy, Sodom, and Morbid Angel. Here’s to 10 more years, dudes! Complementing and contrasting NLP’s sound are Minneapolis slingers of heavy groove, the enigmatically named B!, and promising neophytes, Silenize, who also hail from Eau Claire and raise a considerable racket. This show is guaranteed not to let your summer end with a whimper.
