Red Shoes on the Radio

Garrison Keillor documentary coming to Mabel Tainter

Brent Widmark |

Garrison Keillor has spent the last 35 years creating the rural Minnesota town Lake Wobegon in the minds of A Prairie Home Companion listeners. The radio show host is the feature of Garrison Keillor: The Man on the Radio in the Red Shoes, a documentary that will begin airing on PBS this summer, but until then will have a free screening at the Mabel Tainter. Lake Wobegon is a world constructed in a way that it allows Keillor to poke fun at his audience, and he can get away with it because he is one of them. The niche Keillor has carved in Americana has no comparison in today’s world of reality TV, summer movie explosions, and the now-you-see-‘em-now-you-don’t length of time most shows are given to start bringing in the money. His heavy voice falls, and sings, out of the radio each Saturday night as it’s brought to you by the makers of Powdermilk Biscuits. Peter Rosen, Emmy and Director’s Guild of America Award winner, spent over a year filming and following Keillor as the humorist and prolific writer produced his radio show. Maybe they partook in some potlucks together or participated in a flag day ceremony. Rosen’s documentary will begin airing nationwide in July. For this free screening on June 17, space is limited, so make reservations by contacting 235-0001 ext. 100 or boxoffice@mabeltainter.com.
