Have you ever found yourself saying, “Well, I think the book was better than the movie?” Then join UW-Eau Claire lecturers Emily Bright Krusack and Valerie Guyant for discussions on film adaptations of short stories and the Harry Potter novels. Driven by a mutual interest in how film adaptations influence and affect literature, Krusack and Guyant teamed up to do this short series in hopes of getting the community involved in film and literature, as well as some interesting conversation. “We’ll be looking at the details and asking larger questions,” Krusack explained, her voice excited. “At what point can you no longer say the movie is based off the book? How does the plot change with information left out?” The series begins March 10 with Hitchcock’s thriller Rear Window, an adaptation of Cornell Woolrich’s short story with loads of character and plot adjustments. Future topics will focus on Harry Potter films and corresponding novels, Minority Report, and Sweet Land, both based on short stories. Don’t know the stories? Never seen the movies? Don’t worry; prior knowledge of the material is not necessary to attend, though it is welcomed. All you need is an interest in literature and movies, and a sandwich or two in a little brown bag, if you’re prone to hunger strikes
