This issue’s cover features another interesting performance piece from the active art students of UW-Stout (details below & a video/discussion on VolumeOne.org). I say “another,” because you might remember last year around this time when we featured that oh-so loved/hated image of a different Stout performance piece – one depicting two people on the floor covered in smashed tomatoes – now commonly referred to as Volume One’s “tomato cover.” I love these sorts of public displays – whether they’re dramatic and meaninful expressions, or just visual whimsy for its own sake. The Chippewa Valley could use quite a bit more of this. And when it does happen, more of it needs to come out of university galleries and be brought onto the streets for us all to enjoy. There are now dozens of opportunities where such projects could take shape – the new Banbury Art Crawl or the Open Air Festival of the Arts. Chalkfest, Fall Fest, any fest – start your own fest. Or just do it on a random weekday for no good reason. You don’t have to be an art student – take a Friday off work with some friends and just do it. Maximize the effect by making sure people know about it, either before, during, or after. Then, maybe we’ll all have just a little more fun around here – in the name of art for art’s sake.
