2009 CINEMA SPONSORS:

Raising Arizona [PG-13/94 min] This cult classic comedy from 1987 is the second film helmed by the infamous Coen Brothers (The Big Lebowski, No Country for Old Men). It follows a former outlaw (Nicolas Cage) and his wife, a former police officer (Holly Hunter), who find out they’re infertile and cannot adopt so decide to kidnap a baby. Slapstick hilariousness and impressive pyrotechnics ensue as they become entangled with a headhunter and two prison escapees.

This is Spinal Tap [R/82 min] Both the ultimate rock movie parody and the movie that invented the “mockumentary,” This is Spinal Tap has been a cult comedy staple since its release in 1984 and turned up to 11 ever since. It follows a heavy metal trio several decades into their career, as they hope to relaunch themselves with a new album and tour. Actors Michael McKean, Harry Shearer, and Christopher Guest hysterically improv their way through the backstage drama and on-stage mishaps.

Enter the Dragon [R/98 min] Widely regarded as the greatest film featuring martial arts master Bruce Lee, Enter the Dragon was also his swan song as he died shortly after. The 1973 flick was Hollywood’s first stab at kung fu, and surrounds an exclusive fighting tournament on an island organized by a Shaolin master-turned crime lord. As an undercover agent with a thirst for vengeance, lets just say Bruce Lee wants more than to win the tournament.

Field of Dreams [PG/107 min] As inspirational and feel-good as they come, this movie epitomizes baseball season, Iowa, and the bond of a father and son. Kevin Costner stars as a small farmer inspired by a mysterious voice (“If you build it he will come”) to build a baseball field in which the spirits of players from yesteryear gather. James Earl Jones, Burt Lancaster, and Ray Liotta also star in this summertime “hit.”
