Reviewed: Fired Up Pizza Company (CLOSED)

I had high hopes but walked away disappointed. Prices are higher than the quality warrants. Not a good place to take the family for pizza. The pizza was soggy and warm, not hot. The decor is uninspired. Artisan pricing meets sub-standard product. Not a terrible experience, but not one worth repeating.

Yes, you may get food tossed at you. Yes, you may see a flaming onion volcano extinguished by a peeing figurine. And yes, you might actually have to remove the stick from your butt and enjoy yourself, because isn't that the whole point of a hibachi restaurant like this? If you want a quiet meal where nobody will bother you while you and your significant other sit across from each other, quietly reading your Kindles, this is not the place for you. The food is good, although not great, and is plentiful. The staff is friendly. The atmosphere is lively. Overall, a solid choice for an occasional gathering with friends and family. Not so much for an intimate date. Oh, and the sushi is better than I've had anywhere else in Eau Claire.

I was way excited to hear about a new BBQ joint coming to town. It's always been hard to get good BBQ in Eau Claire. And unfortunately, it still is. Six of us went to Dickey's and tried out much of the menu. The ribs had decent flavor, but the texture reminded me of dog treats a bit. Most of the sides were not just bad, but really bad. The mac and cheese looked like it had been sitting somewhere unpleasant for several hours, and my son chose not to eat more than a couple bites (and he almost never leaves mac and cheese behind). The free ice cream is that cheap grainy stuff like you get at most Chinese buffets (again, even my son wouldn't eat it). On the upside, the pulled pork and brisket weren't bad, and the fried okra was really good.

Back in middle school (maybe earlier) many, many prank calls went to a gentleman named...... Well, let's just say he definitely had the most unfortunate name in the phone book. His first name was only slightly humorous (to preteen kids, anyway). His last name a little more so. But put the two together? Oh, boy.
Of course, I never made any of those prank calls. It was other kids. I swear.

Surprisingly few local shops using…

It's already been mentioned, but The Coffee Grounds' Facebook account is my local favorite because it alerts me to new beers they receive, many of which are limited release and may not be around for long.

City Ponders Terrain Park

Sabrina, I don't think comparing the park plans to Oakwood mall is a reasonable way to look at this. There are currently and/or have been several area examples of ski trails, bike trails, warming huts, dog parks, tow-rope-supported tubing hills, etc that have not led to development anywhere near what you're suggesting. Again, your concerns aren't without merit, but my opinion is that the park will be good for an area of town that is in need of this type of thing.

City Ponders Terrain Park

I can understand the concern about developing more of Eau Claire's green space, but consider the alternatives. At least the space won't be turned into another subdivision. By turning the majority of this park into trails, more residents will take part in activities that teach them just how important it is to protect natural areas and not be indifferent. Through my experience with the Chippewa Off Road Bike Association (one of the groups chosen to build trails here) I've learned that the best way to protect our parks is to give people ways to enjoy them. If the city decided to sell the Northwest Community Park today, I'd imagine there wouldn't be much protest from Eau Claire residents as a whole. If they tried to do so five years from now, after groups like CORBA had put effort into sustainable trails and users had a chance to enjoy them, you'd have a whole lot of people fighting tooth and nail to keep that from happening.

Huge selection. Thus ends my discussion of this restaurant's finer points. I can back up what other reviewers said about a taste similar to the smell of manure. And it wasn't just one dish that tasted this way, but almost everything I tried. Can someone please tell me what it is that gives their food that taste? Please? I'd like reassurance that it was a legitimate seasoning, so I don't have to go on considering the alternatives. Also, the crawdads (which I was excited to discover on the buffet) were as bad as anything I've ever tasted. And yes, the prices were relatively high compared to other Chinese buffets. I know, the price includes sushi, but maybe offer a discount to us folks who prefer to not partake in ahi that tastes like it spent the day working on a dairy farm.

I can't see why any of the local celebrities would be any more interesting than Mike Perry. Therefore...added.

Bicycle Backlash Brewing?

"It seems like Eau Claire – given the general temperament of a large number of its citizens – is a place that could easily see a pretty strong backlash against bikes..."

Please expand on this statement, if you don't mind, Mike.

I'm a cyclist, and I think Eau Claire drivers are pretty good about sharing the roads with bikes, especially considering what I've heard and read from cyclists in other areas.
