UPDATED: Eaux/Prex Claires - Here’s…

Naranjadia

It’s not altogether “okay” to live with this uncertainty, or as Keats would have said, “negative capability.” Some of us with disabilities and/or children need to be able to plan a bit more than this. I bought the tickets. I have every year. But I have no idea how to attend Friday and Saturday on my more limited schedule.

The only place in Eau Claire where if you don't make a reservation on a Friday or Saturday, you are hosed. Good quality ingredients, well-prepared.

I've been to Bijou twice. On the first occasion, I came with a group. One of the group members was vegetarian, and there were no appropriate entrees. The chef made something delicious especially for her. Hopefully his new menu will include a vegetarian item. My food both times was imaginative and exquisite, as well as well presented. Great drinks and wine selection. Not many tables, excellent service, make a reservation & costs $$$.

For breakfast, their food is fair to good. The service started out well, but we felt abandoned after awhile.

Fuji has great sushi. It does feel a little bit like a well-decorated barn, but since the sushi is high-quality, I can forgive that. The service has always been good - we've eaten there about 12 times. I do think they could revamp their kids menu a bit.

We always stick with the Irish menu and we haven't gone wrong yet. The highlight is Irish stew, but we've also liked the Irish stew and Bangers and mash.

Manny's is a restaurant we can count on when we want delicious food and service. I love their snapper Vera Cruz and their chips, salsa, and guacamole are first rate. Their margarita selection is great and their bar staff knowledgeable. They also have delicious fish tacos and their house side salad is genius.

Azul is reliable, good Mexican food. They don't overdo it on the cheese and many of the more interesting menu items are less Americanized and very delicious. When they opened, I was hoping they would have more of an emphasis on good tequila in their beverage menu. Their margaritas are pretty good, but nothing special. It's also a great family dining place!

I like Mona's a lot, but it is way too loud and it's been that way for the eleven years I've lived here and they don't seem interested in changing it. We would take people there much more often if we knew we'd be able to hear each other. But the pizzas are delicious, as are many of the appetizers. They tend to favor cream-enhanced entrees which get a little rich and heavy, but if you go for one of their non-cream sauce based dishes it is hard to go wrong. Excellent bar and wine list.

Great Restaurants

Kids can be a factor, too. When my husband and I go out alone, we always eat local. When we take out the kids, it's 50/50 whether it will be a local place or not, for 2 reasons: 1) Chain restaurants often have gobs of kids so we don't worry about ours being a distraction/disruption, and 2) Chains often have all the kid amenities like crayons, and can gear their service to "kid timing."

That being said there are several kid-friendly local restaurants here, like Dragenetti's and Manny's. It's not always easy to tell, though. I was shocked to hear that Barbette in Mnpls was kid-friendly, but when we went there the staff was great and the conversations so lively our kids couldn't have disrupted if they tried.

We've always had good steaks and fish here. In fact, the only times we have left disappointed were when we didn't have reservations and couldn't get in.

The food at Manny's tastes fresh. They make a delicious posole soup, and I've always enjoyed their guacamole and seafood dishes. Sometimes the sauces seem like overkill, but conversely their ceviche is a little boring. The service is very good and we feel welcome even when we bring along our toddlers.
