Global Warming Exists, According to Santa

Emily Thierfelder

Just in time for the holiday season, one UWEC professor decided to create a Christmas gift with a positive message. With the help of Eau Claire resident and pilot R. Michael Webb, Art & Design Professor Li-Ying Bao wrote Riding with Santa, a children’s book that tells the story of how, while flying across the earth to deliver presents on Christmas Eve, Santa sees the rapidly changing landscape and decides to share his concern about the pollution, melting icebergs, endangered animals, and smog-filled cities with children from around the world. Together, Santa and the children come up with some interesting methods of addressing these issues, including the creation of a uniquely efficient sleigh for Santa himself. Thanks to the help of the university’s foreign language department and Bao’s art students, the book is available in English, Chinese, German, and Spanish, and full of colorful, kid-friendly illustrations. The book is available for purchase online at www.a3animation.com/products.htm; $10 from each book sold will benefit UW-Eau Claire’s Campus Sustainability Initiatives Fund.
