Picking up where Scott Morfitt left off, another self proclaimed public radio junkie David Smuhl now hosts Local Independence, which is still aired during the school year on WUEC 89.7FM Sunday nights at 7pm. Keeping true to the spirit of Local Independence he aims to continue to show the vast amount of talent flowing from the Chippewa Valley and its close neighbors. Eau Claire Hardcore Scene: Part 1

This week the podcast returns with something a little different. In the first part of a 3-part series on Eau Claire's hardcore scene, I interviewed Nate Dungeon. Nate has been organizing and hosting shows at his house for almost a decade, and he sat down with me to relay some the history of the scene as well as some of the ethos that drives it. So sit down and have a listen.

This week: Local tunes straight outta Menomonie

This week the Local Independence podcast revisits Menomonie to talk to the man behind The New Audrey, the elusive Alex Clark. We talked about making music for yourself, integrating it into everything you do, releasing it for free, and a ton of other good stuff. Alex also was kind enough to play an in-studio version of his song “There's Nothing Between Us,” and I even threw in another song for you. The phrase “hooked up” comes to mind when describing this one. Enjoy!

This week: Scott Morfitt “broadcasts from Iraq”

This week I have a very special podcast. Scott Morfitt, Local Independence’s creator and host was kind enough to send along a reading he did while waiting to be deployed to Iraq. In true radio-nerd fashion, Scott purchased a portable mixing board for his travels, and hopefully this will be the first in a series of readings Scott does for the show. Short but sweet, check it out.

This week, we ask “Who’s getting artsy in Menomonie?”

This week, the podcast showcases the goings-on of our friendly neighbors to the west, Menomonie. I interviewed Jennifer Ekstrand and Cheyenne Seeley about the Menomonie art gallery “A Clean Poorly Lighted Space” as well as about the Menomonie art community in general. I also play some music by menomonie artist The New Audrey. It's a really neat look at a really neat space with some great music to boot.

An interview with Polydream that is more fun than cotton candy

This week on the podcast I interview Lucas Etten, John Knudson, and Britton Rice of the Madison group Polydream. And to top it off, they were kind enough to do an in studio preformance that is exclusive to you, you beautiful Local Independence listeners out there. It's not often out-of-town acts come in for a performance, so this was a lot of fun. How much fun? I would say a notch above cotton candy. Judge for yourself.

Interview: The New Science talks about their own science.

The Local Independence podcast is back with an interview with Kyle Culver and Savannah Smith of the Eau Claire indie duo The New Science. Kyle and Savannah talked to me about growing in the Eau Claire music scene, developing their sound, and a whole host of other subjects. I also play a couple tracks off of their latest demo. So check out The New Science podcast – it's a lot better than Chem 101.

Band Interview: Letters From Earth w/ demo track "Hot Sex"

This week I sat down to talk with Riley Schiefelbein and Tyler Griggs from the emerging Eau Claire band Letters From Earth. It's a good conversation about forming a band with a unique sound and developing a niche in the Eau Claire music scene. Bonus: you'll hear their demo track "Hot Sex."

Local Record-Making with Kyle Frenette

On this week’s podcast, I interview Kyle Frenette from Amble Down Records (Chippewa Falls). We talk about the changes Amble Down has gone through, its vision for the future, and the label’s place in the indie label world. It's a bit short, but it packs a punch, so hold on to your seat, and give it a listen.

New host Dave Smuhl talks about balancing art, music, and art, and music with local Ben Larson.

This week I invite you to join me in my first ever Volume One podcast! And as far as firsts go I think it is up there with moon landings and 3 minute miles. I've got a great big 2-part interview with artist and musician Ben Larson, and sandwiched in the middle of that is a track from his band Oh Israel. Ben and I talk a lot about how the art community and the music community can work together, and the general state of both. There is really a little bit of something for everyone in this podcast, really though, stop reading this and check it out!

Part 2: Interview with local rocker Trevor Carl Ives (of Meridene)

This week I had the second part of my two part interview with Trevor Carl Ives of Meridene. We talk about the nuts and bolts of putting together an album and about two concerts they have coming up. Also, we will hear three more tunes off of their new album.

Nestled at the end of the podcast is an opinion piece by David Alan Steinfeld of the Flip Side. He talks about first amendment rights and privilege of an open forum. Also, he addresses the woes of this organization as they face both funding cuts and loss of departmental oversight.

As I state on the outset of this piece if anyone wants to respond with a well written, thought out, and concise counter point I will gladly record one for the show. Email me any proposals at localindependence@gmail.com.

Now, enjoy the podcast!

A classic episode. Jason Sunde plays bass in The Daredevil Christopher Wright. He was the first person I ever interviewed for radio. He was a great sport and very forthright about their recording process.

Happy Accidents with Ben Hinz and Flowing Poetry with Abi Zimmer

This week I had the treat of starting a two-part interview with Ben Hinz. He has been making music in the Chippewa Valley for a long time now. We chat about the little glitches in recording that lead to some very interesting sounds that make albums unique. After that, Abi Zimmer has a poetry reading for us that is quite expressive. Actually, it typifies why spoken word is integral to this program. But enough with the college words, let's get ta' listenin'.

The Rear End (Mike Paulus) on Chasing Rainbows

Volume One's own Mike Paulus gives listeners a unique perspective on why he values the Chippewa Valley. It is unique and fresh and you can almost feel an ocean breeze while you listen to it. But, I don't want to ruin any surprises.
