A recent trend has Midwestern farms converting themselves into gourmet pizza parlors across the state. Farms have found a new way to utilize their resources by harvesting fresh, homegrown ingredients to craft mouth-watering pizzas that can be enjoyed right there on the farm. Round up your family and friends for a summer picnic on one of Wisconsin’s pizza farms!

1. A-to-Z Produce & Bakery

AtoZ Produce and Bakery, located just east of the Mississippi River, has developed quite the following for their highly regarded pizza nights. Once winter is behind us, AtoZ opens its doors to serve unique, wood-fired pizzas to hoards of hungry customers. Wait times increase significantly as the days get warmer, but pizza will be served rain or shine. AtoZ now also serves wine and beer by the bottle. If you’re in a rush and can’t stay to enjoy the atmosphere, the folks at AtoZ would be more than happy to fix you up a pizza to go!

2. Farm to Fork Retreat

Located on 21 acres along the Buffalo River near Mondovi, Farm to Fork Retreat serves up overnight accommodations, vacations, and event rentals, as well as wood-fired pizza nights during the warmer months. On Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays from 5-9pm they fire up the brick oven and cook pizza pies covered with home-grown organic toppings and grass-fed meats. Dine on picnic tables inside the barn or out, enjoy an adult beverage from the Milk-House Bar, and bring your own chairs for a bonfire as the sun sets.

Stoney Acres offers a range of seasonal pizzas in addition to their rotating selection of specials. If pizza isn’t enough on your visit, don’t forget to check out the farmer’s market stand for some fresh produce (and maybe even some sweets!) to take home with you. They also feature various local and artisanal cheeses from across Wisconsin. Think of Stoney Acres Farm as your one-stop farm shop!

4. Suncrest Gardens Farm

Suncrest Gardens Farm, settled in the serene Yaeger Valley, is the perfect farm for a pizza dinner. Wood-fired pizzas are cooked in less than two minutes, thanks to their handmade, Italian-style oven. Suncrest also offers a gluten-free option for those with special dietary needs. 5. The Stone Barn

The Stone Barn in Nelson will have you raving about its hand rolled crusts and homegrown toppings. All of the meats used as toppings are locally raised and hand-seasoned so that every bite bursts with flavor. Don’t forget dessert! The Stone Barn also serves ice cream so you won’t have to leave without satisfying that sweet tooth. New pizzas are added to the menu often, but you can always customize your pizza with the “build your own” option.

6. North Star Homestead Farms

Distance from Eau Claire: 125 miles
Drive time: About 2 hours 

This farm deep in the Chequamegon National Forest produces grass-fed meats and produce. It includes the Farmstead Creamery & Cafe, where the owners make sheep’s-milk gelato on-site. Pizza Farm Days are noon to 8pm Saturdays from Memorial Day weekend through September, and diners also can order salads, craft beer. and wine.

BONUS: Together Farms

While pizza isn’t necessarily the name of the game at Together Farms, the Mondovi-based beef farm has started throwing Burger Nights, where you can explore the grass-fed farm, relax, and take it all in while a rotating chefs from different local restaurants grill you up a delectable gourmet burger made with 100 percent grass-fed beef from the farm. And if that doesn’t convince you to check it out, perhaps the fries and cheese curds fried in lard will. The farm is hosting a handful of burger nights the rest of the summer as follows: July 21, 22, 23, 28, 29, and 30 and Sept. 8, 9, 10, 15, 16, and 17.
