Leap Into Self-Reflection: Journal Prompts for the New Year

Katie Larson |

Every good writer follows the old saying: “write what you know.” No one knows you better than yourself, so this set of writing prompts will challenge you to dig deep down into the depths of 2016 as you discover what went well and what could be a challenge in 2017. This is a simple exercise in stream-of-consciousness writing, meaning you shouldn’t overthink what you are writing. Just go with the flow as the pen hits the paper and worry about polishing it up later on. Feel free to pick one or more of the prompts to write about. It is up to you to share your thoughts with others, but remember to be honest and reflective in the process.

• What went well for you in 2016? List some positive events, delightful memories, or exciting moments from this past year.

• What did you hope to accomplish in 2016? Did you accomplish everything you set out to do? Why or why not?

• What did you learn about yourself in 2016? What events taught you those particular lessons?

• Why is the New Year so important?

• What did you accomplish in 2016 and what are your goals in 2017?

• Do you believe New Year’s resolutions are important? Why or why not?

• How will you remember 2016? Explain your answer.

• If you could pick one mistake that happened in 2016 to do over, what would it be and why?

• What are you most excited for in 2017? Explain your excitement.

• What challenges have you overcome? What challenges do you still face in 2017?
