6 Tips for Family Movie Night

Katie Larson |

Is your movie night stuck in a rut? Try some of these six simple (and cheap) ways to spruce up your next family movie night.

1. Kid’s choice!

If you are like me, you probably had to make a thousand decisions this week. Come Friday I am usually over making adult choices. So instead of having to make yet another family decision, I let my daughter pick the movie. This week’s choice: The Grinch Who Stole Christmas! Oh, and did I forget to mention that you cannot say “no” to the choice either?

2. Build a blanket fort or an eagle’s nest.

Pile up all of the blankets, sleeping bags and pillows found throughout the house, cuddle up with your dear ones, and let the show start.

3. Play a game.

I know it sounds weird but if you’re finding yourself watching the same movie over and over and over again, try to refresh the mundane by playing a game while watching the show. To explore this option, check out these printable Movie Bingo cards posted on Everydaycori.com.

4. Make candy or snack necklaces.

That’s right, I said make. Grab the pretzels, popcorn, gum drops, gummy bears, Froot Loops, Funyuns and put it on a string for all to enjoy. Word of advice, stay clear of chocolate.

5. Treat the event like a picnic.

Forgo the rule of no food or drink on the white carpet and the importance of eating at the dining room table. Throw a blanket down on the floor, put the pizza box in the middle of everyone, and chow down while the feature begins.

6. Theme it!

This doesn’t have to be anything extravagant, but if you want to go all out, you totally could. Grab your kid’s favorite princess or superhero PJs (or yours depending on how you roll) or dress the kids up in their imaginary play costumes, and enjoy the movie in character. Or if time (and mental capacity) allows, plan the snacks or even dinner around the spirit of the movie.
