Monument Valley's Infectious Puzzles and Optical Trickery

Monument Valley, a perplexing and addictive mobile game, takes a silent princess named Ida through level upon level of beautifully-made 3D monuments so she can place a geometric figure at the summit of each structure. Each level brings a new monument, which looks like something from the mind of M.C. Escher with a minimalist twist. The art in the game is gorgeous, and gameplay is so simple it lets you focus on the subtleties of each puzzle. It won a 2014 Apple Design Award, was named Apple’s best iPad game of 2014, and sold over two million copies by January 2015; by May 2016, sales of the game exceeded $26 million. It could have been just a simple puzzle game, but with the added trickery of optical illusions, crows that block Ida’s path, unique art design, and infectious gameplay, Monument Valley can keep the brains of kids and adults alike buzzing for more as they make their way through each monument. There are only 10 distinct levels in the first version of the app, but the developers have since added additional quests called Ida’s Dream and Forgotten Shores. Monument Valley is truly an awesome and refreshing game no matter how old you are.
