Once Upon a Prom helps teens’ dreams come true

Like Cinderella’s fairy godmother, Once Upon a Prom can make young women’s dreams of a storybook night at the dance come true. The organization, which was founded in 2012 by Jennifer Rooney and Liz Poteete, provides free prom dresses and accessories (shoes, jewelry, handbags, makeup, and coupons) to local girls who wouldn’t otherwise be able to afford them. Other than having a fabulous time at prom, the only thing the girls have to do is provide six hours of volunteer work to a community service of their choice.

If you or a young lady you know could benefit from Once Upon a Prom’s help, visit onceuponaprom.com to learn more and to apply for the program. Once Upon a Prom is also looking for donations of gently used formal dresses and accessories, which can be dropped off at Boys and Girls Club locations in Eau Claire, Chippewa Falls, or Menomonie; Williams Diamond Center in Eau Claire; Plato’s Closet in Eau Claire; and North and Memorial high schools in Eau Claire. Donations are tax deductible. Once Upon a Prom will be 3-6pm Saturday, April 2, and noon-3pm Sunday, April 3, at the Salon Professional Academy, 3408 Mall Drive, Eau Claire. Participating girls will get free hair and make-up tips as well as pick up their dresses and accessories. Who knows, you may find a pair of glass slippers in just the right size!
