Back-to-school season means a return to reading, writing, ’rithmatic – and band practice. Back in the early 1920s, music education started at an early age for the kids in the “model school” at what is now known as UW-Eau Claire (and was then the recently established Eau Claire State Normal School). The so-called “Baby Band” was made up of first and second graders at the school, which at the time was housed inside Schofield Hall. (The stand-alone campus school wasn’t built until the 1950s and was demolished in 2012.)
