Grab a pint, get an update on Barstow Street

Now that the concrete has been crunched and the dirt has been dug, Eau Claire residents undoubtedly have questions about the progress of the reconstruction of South Barstow Street, which began in earnest the day after Memorial Day. Those who want to keep up with the project’s progress can either rubberneck from behind the construction barriers or attend one of the weekly meetings organized by representatives of Downtown Eau Claire Inc. and the city of Eau Claire. The meetings, which began May 30, will be held 2pm each Thursday at the Firehouse, 202 Gibson St. (That’s the downtown tavern, not the actual firehouse a few blocks away.) City and DECI staffers meet with construction contractors every Thursday morning, and on Thursday afternoon they’ll relay what’s been going on that week – and what’s planned for the following week – to interested members of the public. The $1.65 million reconstruction project includes laying new concrete pavement, sidewalks, planting areas, and boulevards on South Barstow between Lake Street and Eau Claire Street. Work on the street itself is scheduled to be finished by Aug. 16, while work on brick pavers on the boulevards should be done by Sept. 13.
