Mini road trip: the Stanley Theatre

Hey, if you’re running out of stuff to do this summer, check out Stanley Wisconsin's recently renovated movie theatre – the Stanley Theatre. The owners decided to remodel the space to look as it did in the 1930’s, when movies only cost a half cent and popcorn had yet to be invented [citation needed]. From the Chippewa Herald ...

  • At a time when it’s hard to keep a small town theater open, the Eslinger family is bringing back the golden age at the Stanley Theater.
  • The 500-seat movie theater, a landmark on Broadway Street, is undergoing a facelift — not to make it look more modern, but to take it back to the theater’s roots in the mid-1930s.
  • The theater now has pretty much the same exterior appearance it did back in its heyday.
  • “It was built in 1936 by Heywood Amusement out of New Richmond, which had a circuit of theaters at the time,” said Daniel “Mussy” Eslinger, who, with his wife Cecelia, bought the theater in 1968.

Read the rest of the article if you’re interested in vintage architectural glass. Because a whole load of it was used on the theatre. Anyway, this is a pretty cool thing to happen to a movie house that was once advertised as the “fanciest place” between Milwaukee and the Twin Cities. And it’s only, like, 45 minutes away. There are certainly worse places to watch Toy Story 3.
