Volume One Gets Back
into Poetry

Mike Paulus |

Back in the Dark Ages (i.e., when we printed in Black & White) Volume One used to run the occasional poem or spoken word piece. My wife and I were putting on the Running Water Poetry Slam at the time, and it was cool to see some of the readers getting printed in this new Volume One thing. But time marched on and poetry fell by the wayside. Well, that’s about to change with our First-Ever Poetry Contest.

We’re now accepting original, unpublished, poetic entries from the local community. Submissions can be up to 1,000 words and may not exceed 100 lines. It is also encouraged to enter two supplemental haiku poems about something in the local community. (Haikus will not be eligible for prizes, but several of the best will be published.)

Prizes include having the work published in Volume One, free admittance to a non-fiction writing course through UW-Eau Claire's Continuing Education office with professor and author Dr. John Hildebrand for Fall 2010 called "Writing the Memoir." Second place will receive a $50 gift certificate to The Book Cellar, and third place will receive a $25 gift certificate to The Book Cellar.

Submission deadline is January 20. Read the rules!

P.S. For all you sticklers out there, yes, I know the guy in that picture above is not famous for his poetry.
