Who Knew? They Have Awards for SWAT Teams

Coming together to form a mystical Triforce of SWAT Power, SWAT teams hailing from Eau Claire, La Crosse, and Vernon counties converged for an award-winning standoff with some gun nut near Viola, Wis., aka “The Heart of the Kickapoo Valley.” Because the teams did so well – despite lots of gunfire and explosions, no one was injured – they’re all getting awards from the Association of SWAT Personnel. The standoff was stoodoffed last April.

WEAU.com is hosting an absolutely non-riveting video of the gun-infested standoff. Don’t watch it. Besides the commercial you have to suffer through, all you see is an old guy coming down a ladder as tear gas billows from his home’s windows. He tosses a gun to the ground as a guy yells, "He's gonna hit the ground shooting boys!" The nut in question, Robert Bayliss, had 90 guns and homemade explosives at his disposal. Bayliss was getting evicted for not paying property taxes when he went all poor-man’s-Rambo on the police.

According to Mr. Anchor Man Chris Herzog, La Crosse's tactical SWAT-mobile “may have been hit” with armor-piercing bullets and hand grenades. Or … what? Maybe not? At any rate, nice work, local SWAT guys!
