International Tension
activist, historian, and novelist Tariq Ali to talk Pakistan
words by Carrie Weiss
Radical activist, historian, and novelist, Tariq Ali, will appear at UW-Eau Claire to deliver his take on Pakistan’s current political crisis. The Asian country, whose government is allied with the U.S., is the speculated residency of Osama Bin Laden, and may be home to members of the NATO-opposing Taliban. Ali brings his perspective on the possibility to the table. The Duel: Pakistan on the Flight Path of American Power, published in September, is a book authored by Ali about the tense relationship between the US and Ali’s homeland. Ali was born in Lahone in today’s Pakistan. In the 1980s, Ali produced a politically-charged Afro-Asian news series called Bandung File that broadcast in Great Britain. Today he broadcasts regularly for BBC radio and contributes to The Guardian and London Review of Books. Ali is currently an editor for New Left Review. Additionally, Ali has written scores of historical novels and nonfiction works. Ali was educated at Oxford University. Ali addresses his American audience; “So my advice to students is, I know you’re under enormous pressures – financial pressures, pressures to find work – I understand that. But if you’re not engaged in challenging the lies of the system, what’s the good of living in this society?”
