Seeds of Deception
Smith discusses dangers of genetically engineered foods
words by Carrie Weiss
Jeffrey M. Smith has devoted his life to food. The internationally recognized author, researcher, and speaker to present during UWEC’s forum series is an expert on genetically modified organisms, and their widespread use in America’s food supply. The Iowa man has lectured in 25 countries and given counsel to world leaders. Smith is known for spilling the beans on GMOs in his 2003 bestseller, Seeds of Deception: Exposing Industry and Government Lies about the Safety of the Genetically Engineered Foods You’re Eating. His first book informed readers of the potential dangers of GMOs and the lack of research on their effects. His work has sparked legislation addressing GMOs and a trend toward safer food purchases. Genetic Roulette: The Documented Health Risks of Genetically Engineered Foods is Smith’s second book, which reveals the deception of Congress, the FDA, and other food safety sources, by biotech companies worldwide. Further literature by Smith includes his weekly international column, Spilling the Beans. Smith founded the nonprofit Institute for Responsible Technology to promote public education on GMOs; he now serves as its executive director. Currently, the institute runs the Campaign for Healthier Eating in America, a program devoted to the elimination of GMOs in the US food supply. Known for his compelling speaking style, Smith is sure to give a scintillating exposé.
