Can't We All Just Get Along?
theologian thins the line between god and evolution
words by Amanda Schaefer
Dr. John Haught is a senior fellow of science and religion at the Woodstock Theological Center at Georgetown University. His expertise is in systematic theology, including issues involving religion, science, evolution, and cosmology. He lectures internationally on these topics, and this year has been awarded a “Friend of Darwin” award from the National Center for Science Education. Haught has also testified for the plaintiffs in the Intelligent Design trial in Harrisburg, Pa. He has written several books, including God and the New Atheism: A Critical Response to Dawkins, Harris, and Hitchens (Louisville: Westminster/John Knox Press, 2008). This book will inform his talk at UW-Eau Claire. Haught will explore the appeal of New Atheism in today’s society, as well as the logical errors that famous atheists fall into in their interpretation of Darwin. With evolution becoming an increasingly legally charged issue, Haught points out in his work that evolution and god aren’t mutually exclusive, and when everyone realizes that, fighting between the supporters of evolution and those of intelligent design will diminish. This socially relevant talk will prove to be interesting not only to those in the academic community, but to those in the general public as well.
