WWI and America: Exploring the Great War’s Impact on the Chippewa Valley

This year marks the centennial of U.S. entry into WWI. In the shadow of other 19th century conflicts, our memory of this war is fading. Explore the impact of “the war to end all wars” on the Chippewa Valley. A series of four programs will explore different aspects of this conflict and its impact on our community.

Rug Hooking Guild

The Tree City Guild Rug Hook Crafters meet weekly on Tuesdays at the Chippewa Valley Museum. Rug hook crafters use a cutter to prepare strips of material, mainly wool, which are then hooked to monk's cloth set on a frame. The Tree City Guild welcomes new members.

Literacy Chippewa Valley Open Learning

Any adult interested in pursuing a specific literacy goal, be it obtaining their GED, increasing their reading comprehension, or improving their math or computer skils, is welcome to attend. After the initial intake and assessment, Literacy Volunteers staff work with students on their educational goals.

Learn to Curl

Try the Olympic Sport of curling. Classroom and on-ice instruction will be provided. No experience necessary. Dress in loose, comfortable layers. The temperature in the ice area is 40 degrees. Bring clean pair of athletic shoes to wear on ice. No boots or hard-soled shoes. All other equipment provided.

Lifeguard Training

Learn the skills to recognize, prevent, and respond to aquatic emergencies. The course certifications include Lifeguarding/First Aid/CPR/AED for Professional Rescuer (valid 2 years).

Free Speech in WWI Wisconsin

Professor Tim Shiell, Director of the Center for the Study of Institutions and Innovation at UW-Stout, will discuss the limits of free speech in Wisconsin and the Chippewa Valley during the Great War, including the major rationales for and against permitting anti-war speech.
