In Support of the Arts: A Janet Carson Retrospective
Join us in a very special gallery event as we host a retrospective of work from 1947 to the present of noted artist and educator, Janet Carson. Every piece will be for sale with all proceeds being donated back to the Art Gallery. From Carson's artist statement: "From an early age I knew my destiny was to be a writer or an artist. With the middle name of WELLINGTON how could I do other? My drawing as a child was unremarkable. I designed dresses for my paper dolls and copied pictures from a dog book. I did not win the poster contest! However, the older I became the more I felt that making art was my main source of comfort and joy. As an art teacher I witnessed children discovering a reassuring sense of self through making art as well. As an aging adult looking back on those years of making and teaching art, I have experienced elation in sharing it, and I do so now in hopes that the work still in my possession will generate funds for a front door entrance to this gallery."

Exhibit: Common Thread Quilters
When Bob and Deb Aaron’s house burned down in the Dunn County town of Otter Creek in 1984, one thing that grew out of the ashes was a women’s quilt group, Common Thread Quilters. The fire quilt they made as their first project for the Aarons was followed by baby quilts, wedding quilts, graduation quilts, and now includes grandchildren quilts. The membership has changed a little over the years, but the majority are founding members with many still living in western Wisconsin, and a few “social members” scattered from Duluth to Madison to New Mexico. The ladies still gather for monthly working sessions in each others' homes, as well as summer quilt retreats at a cabin near Tomahawk on Crystal Lake.

Private Soldiers: A Year in Iraq with a Wisconsin National Guard Unit
This exhibit honors Wisconsin's participants in the Iraq War and helps viewers understand the conflict's human side. "Private Soldiers" is an exhibit version of a Wisconsin Historical Society Press book of the same name. The exhibit showcases photographs and text provided by three members of the Wisconsin Army National Guard's 2-127th Infantry Battalion. This compelling firsthand documentation chronicles the battalion's yearlong deployment from the unique perspective of the soldiers themselves. Through the candid prose of Capt. Benjamin Buchholz and the vivid camera work of Lt. Nathan Olson and Staff Sgt. Joseph Streeter, "Private Soldiers" captures the experiences of these citizen soldiers from training and deployment to their unique mission to their return to homes, jobs, and families. Their mission took them into the most dangerous regions of Iraq, where they withstood hundreds of attacks, saw dozens wounded, and lost three members killed in action.
