Yep, Sonic Is Open
For lunch today a bunch of us office folk decided to visit the new Sonic fast food restaurant (2831 Hendrickson Dr.), on top of what used to be Embers and used to be the Fireside before that. Like toppings piled high, we piled into the Volume One eight-seater van for a premium eating adventure. As we approached Sonic, which opened at 6am today, we found they were serving an order of cars tall enough to pack the drive-thru and the rows of parked service stalls. The line to get in began in the Ron's Castle Foods parking lot, marked by traffic cones and people directing traffic. We, of course, waited without complaints. We ordered from a stall and our SuperSONIC cheeseburgers, Chili Cheese Tots, and soft drinks came to us from cheery roller skating employees. Other attendees fetched sauces or gathered trash. We pondered how the roller skaters worked in the winter, the virtues of your lap as a tabletop, and what exactly is Ocean Water. Then after making merry and telling embellished stories of our youth, we wiped our ketchup-kissed lips and headed back to the Volume One command center. Thought you'd like to know.

while away from home, its always nice to check out
volumeone.com and find out what's going on in my
hometown. it gets me excited to go home for
breaks. but honestly, when i find that people are
using the comment space to fight with one another
in cyberspace, it challenges the pride i have for
being from EC. opinions are opinions. and i
hardly believe that any quarrel is going to be
settled over the typing of your thoughts with the
comfort of never having to show your face. keep
it real EC.

Ya know, I love how this twit has to plug his
myspace every time he/she posts....
As for your working these jobs all your life, did
you ever think of getting a "real job", or didn't
you have the ambition to work something other than
lower wage fast food job? Is that the fault of the
business, or the fault of the person taking the
job? You do realize that these jobs are mainly
targeted at HS and College students, not someone
trying to make a living off it, right?
In closing, I do have to ask, you're asking for a
"truthfull EC", but who's truth are you going to
accept? Because you believe it doesn't make it
true!

I shop at Just Local regularly, bike to almost all
places I travel in town (even during winter),
compost our food materials at home, recycle, buy
sustainable clothing and cleaning products, vote
progressive, and still eat at a chain restaurant
once in a blue moon without feeling like I'm
destroying our community, PTEC. In fact, I welcome
them because sometimes, I just want a friggen'
burger in under 2 minutes, served by people on
roller skates, at a mock 60s diner, and sometimes,
I also want tater tots.
SOMETIMES, that's just what I want. I'd wager
that on a regular day, my carbon footprint on our
community is lower than yours, and my community
involvement is higher. You don't get to tell me
what I'm doing wrong in this community. You can
offer suggestions and advice in a responsible,
informative manner, however.
I don't feel like you're doing that. I do,
however, feel like you're being very narrow-minded
and condescending, and as someone who apparently
is starting a business in the community here very
soon, the last thing you want to do is start
alienating the community you're claiming to want
to help.

Well, well, well. A DISCUSSION. Can you imagine?
Instead of just taking everything that rolls into
town as just peachy, we're actually talking about
it.
And solutions vs. bitching? Well, as luck would
have it, I'm launching my own business this
spring. That's a solution, as is talking about
this. You assume to much.
And degrading those who work there? I'VE WORKED
THESE JOBS MY WHOLE FUCKING LIFE. There's nothing
redeeming about it. Anyone who thinks these places
are doing you a favor for tips or min. wage is
delusional. No one is doing you any favors and
never will. That's not 'hate', that's life.
And I agree 100% that chains succeed because of
us supporting them. Why do you think I posted to
this in the first place? Because we, the public,
have got to start finding out where our dollars go
and to whom, as citizens. Information, GOOD.
Complacency, BAD.
It's amazing to me that anyone would call
questioning corporations or money influence
'hate'. You've just been bought and sold, pal.

I've heard a rumor about a Mongolian restaurant
opening in EC. As I haven't heard of any
Mongolian chains out there...we should figure out
how we as a community can support this unique,
creative place! But it's opening in the EVIL mall
area...oh no what will we do!!

I appreciate Jammer's hope at getting solutions
out of people who just complain, but tell me how
figuring out a way to create a profitable
nation-wide business out of a drive-in restaurant
is "uncreative." you've got to be kidding.
business can be just as creative as anything else,
and it's BS to say that it's not. not always, but
often times chains become chains because they were
creative enough to become good at what they do in
the first place. it's naive to think a chain is
general bad just because it's a chain. they
certainly don't add any authenticity to our
community, but they don't nessicarily do the
damage some might suggest.
and you don't know what makes someone's job
"life-affirming," so don't degrade the people that
hold such jobs. it takes all kinds man.

Get mad about a cool new things that's come to EC.
What's wrong with you, new business is good for
everyone chain or no chain.
Also, there's a new pizza place coming to ec
really soon, start thinking of ways to hate on
that too...

Just to correct a little of your
information.....the rolling jackasses are paid
more than minimum wage. In Wi. the server minimum
wage is $2.33 plus tips. All of our carhops make
much more than that, in fact, more than the $6.50
minimum wage. Plus tips. In fast, none of our
employees are payed the state minimum wage.
Also our food is delivered by some of the same
food distributors as other places, but a vast
majority of it is made in our own processing
plants in Oklahoma, and shipped to the distributor.
So, sorry, it is not the same food you can get
anywhere, it is unique.
However, I truly enjoy your misplaced anger, and
encourage you to keep venting, just make sure you
are accurate about the facts, or your rants become
invalid.

Truthful: I agree that it's uncreative. I agree
that chains are generally bad. I agree that the
jobs at places like this aren't "life-affirming".
What are your suggestions and solutions? How are
you going to motivate people to go elsewhere?
Where should we go instead?
It's easy to bitch. It's even easier to bitch on
the internet.
Having watched some wonderful places like
Pinnyang (sp?) and Flavor of India (or was it
Taste of India?) crumble away, I find motivating
people in this community to try something new to
be very, very challenging.
So, if you're so truthful, tell me what's wrong
with Eau Claire that diverse cuisine, such as
those places mentioned above, can't stay open?
Maybe the chains aren't the problem... afterall,
these places pay big money to search out land that
will be profitable for them.

Don't get me wrong, Ronin. I love the same mundane
garbage wrapped in different wrappers as the next
guy. I mean, why should variety be more than
package deep? I for one am thrilled to see such
wonderful diversity in Eau Claire as 3 new rib
joints, at least 10 burger places and all the many
pizza chains...especially when they all get their
frozen, mass-produced shit from the same
suppliers. What's not to love? And the work is
fantastic. What's more life-affirming than wearing
a costume and kissing the ass of some dickhead who
didn't get enough ketchup on his fries, or I'm
fired? You're right. I should welcome this and ALL
chains with open arms, because, as they say, we
should be grateful to be working at all. I love
being bent over a barrel!

I love crappy, corporate fast food joints that
will serve me breakfast at 3pm! And burgers at
6am! That's awesome :) And on rollerskates!
On an economic growth note...I think we should be
happy to add any jobs to our economy at the
moment.

No one put a gun to your head and forced you to go
there did they? Just like no one makes they
employees work there.
Why do you uppity people have to start bashing
everything you deem "corporate" when alot of the
"local" places are just as crappy?
How much more "truthful" would you like me to
get?LOL

I love those cheery roller skates too! The
employees dress up in humiliating outfits and roll
around like jackasses for minimum wage so that
I'm entertained just long enough to forget that
I'm sitting in yet ANOTHER goddamned chain
restaurant eating the same garbage I'd get at any
other chain. Thanks again corporate America!
