State of the Pavement

Driving home from work last night, snaking around the street construction on Farwell Street, I was listening to Mary Jo Wagner (that little minx) chatting with Mike Schatz and Geoff Moeding about the new Phoenix Parkside construction in downtown Eau Claire. They were talking about downtown in general when “Bruce from Chippewa Falls” called in to comment on the state of downtown’s streets. He said the streets are horrible.

OK, what?

The streets are not pristine, not by a long shot. But “horrible?” Maybe Bruce was born in a city paved in layers of smooth, solid gold (where guys named "Bruce" are treated like rockstars). Not sure. At any rate, there seems to be a horribly large pile of people around here absolutely obsessed with street conditions. What gives? I’m no fan of potholes, but I rarely find a street I’d call “horrible.” I guess beautiful roads are a sign of a community with high self esteem, and that’s cool, but if the streets are a little bumpy, um … drive slower?

I for one think pot hole suck (explitive)!!! Yet,
our roads arn't that bad.

This Bruce guy need to stop making Eau Clairs
look bad. He is preety much saying the all roads
are "horrible", then he should get the money for
city to fix them. This economic crisis were in is
not helping the tax payer, then raise taxes to get
the money to fix them. NO!!

Our roads are just fine. Give or take pot holes,
cracks, and canyons.

You want horrible, try biking First street,
between Mead and Platt street. It's like the
surface of the moon, and has been that way since
before I moved into the neighborhood 7 years ago!

As a year-round biker and neighborhood go-to bike
repair guy, I would have to mostly agree with Mr.
Springsteen that downtown streets are horrible.
Graham and Barstow do not have potholes, they have
mini canyons with sharp walls that cause flat
tires (pinch flats or snakebikes in the biz) on a
good day and destroy rims on others. Sometimes
they are avoidable, but with traffic (no bikes on
sidewalks, remember) sometimes you need to take a
hit on the wheel to avoid a car or stay straight
in your lane.

And in general street repair is not a car vs bike
vs bus thing. All forms of transport need good
roads, especially in the urban core where biking
makes sense for a lot of people, and buses and
taxis...

What I would like to see is Barstow ripped up to
reveal the old trolley rail tracks that still
exist below the cement, now those would be smooth.
UWEC to Phoenix Park San Fransisco style...

Drive Slower? I'm on two wheels, I have to
balance. My gravel driveway is smoother than
graham Avenue.

As do V1 people, I drive the downtown course 4 x's
a day and I think, WOW ! this is gonna be great
and another step in our revitalization. I think
Westside rocks and yeah ! you do too mike.
