'Ready, Set, Read!' at the Library This Summer

Haley Wright |

The L.E. Phillips Memorial Public Library is kicking off its summer reading program, which runs from June 1 through Aug. 15 and allows children aged birth-18 to enjoy reading and being read to for prizes AND for a good cause. The program invites participants to pick up a Summer Reading Record in the Youth Services area and document their reading activities over the summer. Completed records can then be turned into the Youth Services area for prizes. There is a teen-specific program for kids in grades 6-12 that allows patrons to earn Book Bucks, which can be used to purchase prizes, or raffle tickets for bigger prizes. There will be many, many fun activities at the library this summer, including: the grand opening of the new teen lounge, Harry Potter’s Birthday Celebration, a Lego Club, Nintendo Switch Tournaments, and a color water fight. They will also host a score of live performances, including the Minnesota Zoomobile, a Korean dancing demonstration, a circus skills workshop, and lots of opportunities for kids and their adults to make things together. There will be a Challenge of the Day each day sponsored by Charter Bank to benefit Special Olympics of Wisconsin, where Charter Bank will donate one dollar for each challenge completed. The library aims to raise $500 for the cause. Kids can get a free bus pass to get to and from to the library on the city bus on Tuesdays and Thursdays between June 4 and Aug. 29.
