Matthew Bergs is studying illustration at UWEC. He speaks English well – he learn it from a book.

“Did you know that moose are called ‘elk’ in Europe and Asia? It’s true. The scientific name for moose is ‘alces alces,’ which is simply Latin for ‘moose.’ The word moose itself is borrowed from Algonquian languages, roughly translating to “he strips off,” which is a thing moose do to the bark of trees. Since the word is not originally English, it doesn’t follow the English grammar rules from the Great Vowel Shift, and so its plural is just moose, and not meese. In any case, it’s a whole lot of linguistic shenanigans for one cool critter!”  – The Artist

Volume One finds its cover art in a number of ways, from local art shows to random emails to knowing someone who knows someone who knows a great artist. The art always originates from a current or former Chippewa Valley resident. If you'd like to submit cover art, send us a message.
