Andrew Werthmann would like to drop the word “acting” from his title: He wants to be elected president of the Eau Claire City Council in his own right next April. Werthmann, vice president of the Eau Claire City Council, has served as the body’s acting president since June, when previous Council President Kerry Kincaid stepped down. A nine-year veteran of the council, Werthmann announced Oct. 11 that he will run in April to complete the remaining year of Kincaid’s term. (A new three-year term would begin in 2020.) “I’m running for Council President because we need an Eau Claire whose success is shared by all and where no one is left behind,” Werthmann said in a statement. “We now have a thriving downtown and booming tech, arts, education ,and medical sectors – Eau Claire has truly become a destination community where people want to live and work. But despite our community’s recent growth, not everyone has benefited. It is immoral that 16 percent of our friends and neighbors are living in poverty and almost half are living paycheck to paycheck and just one bad day away from losing everything.” Werthmann said he will be campaigning on three-point “Eau Claire for All” initiative, which includes strengthening neighborhoods, confronting poverty and inequality, and investing in sustainability. Werthmann is the first candidate to announce an intention to run for City Council president, but it’s still early: Potential candidates can’t begin collecting signatures on nominating petitions until December. The spring election will be April 2. If necessary, a primary will be Feb. 19.
