Hunger Games: Valley Food Scene Looks to Prove Itself

Yankee Jack’s Public House

It was truly a scrumptious year for Chippewa Valley folks who like a good meal out. In 2016, a dozen or so restaurants fired up their kitchens, perfected their menus, and opened their doors. Whether they’re forward-thinking dining options attached to hot new hotels (The Lakely, The Informalist, Wissota Chophouse), exciting new culinary ideas taking hold in old spaces (The Local Lounge, Hangar 54 Grill, Yankee Jack’s Public House, The Duke & Dagger), or just plain delicious grub (Dhimitërs, Mike’s Cheese Shack, Monk’s Bar & Grill, Roblé), we seem to be taking food more seriously than ever.

We don’t have to just rely on fast food or huge chains anymore. We have real chefs that are taking extra care to prepare food in a way that hasn’t really been done here that much previously. With all the new restaurants, though, the scene is looking more competitive than ever, as local establishments look to survive and thrive in their own niche. If all of these new spots are to be successful, it’s going to take a wave of support to make it happen. Good thing we love to eat here in Valley.

In 2017, we should see some exciting new places pop up as well. The long-awaited Water Street spot from the owners of Mona Lisa’s restaurant called Roost should progress this year.

And further down Menomonie St., the old Kaiser Lumber building will transform into a family-friendly gastro pub called The Wood Knot Tavern.

Altoona’s River Prairie development project has some foodie delights planned too including a brewpub chain Cowboy Jack’s and a new venture from the owners of Draganetti’s called Za-51.

Our tastebuds want more and we’re gonna get it in 2017.
