Grace Fechner is an artist based in Minneapolis. She graduated in 2013 from UW-Eau Claire with a BFA in illustration. She makes mixed media drawings and paintings.

This piece is from my ‘Connection’ series, which was inspired by a story in National Geographic about the traditional costumes worn by people of various villages in France. Each villager had a costume that celebrated the specific village, like a sports jersey. As an outsider, these costumes looked remarkably similar, like variations on a theme; but to each wearer, an extra coil of ribbon or a darker hue of lace meant you were from elsewhere and thus deserved ridicule. This struck me as analogous to the root of many sociopolitical issues.” – The Artist
