tiny community of Stockholm blooms with annual art fair

Sammy Gibbons |

The population of Stockholm, Wis., is 66, but this year the town will feature nearly twice that number of artists as part of the 43rd Annual Stockholm Art Fair. One-hundred and six creators will show and sell their works on Saturday, July 16, in Village Park overlooking Lake Pepin. Various types of visual art, such as clay, photography, and glass, as well as jewelry and other wearable and decorative pieces, will dazzle attendees. Artists will travel from various states, but the festival will celebrate numerous local talents as well. The food provided will be unique and primarily local, with a menu featuring organically raised beef and chicken pita sandwiches. Five musicians from the region will also perform diverse genres of jams throughout the day. Among them will be blues crooner David Jones and folk-rock trio Yata, Sinz and Orfield. Pepin-based artist Barbara McIlrath painted this year’s featured fair poster; the design is created by a new artist each year and copies are sold, as posters and potholders, at the entrance to the event. Limited parking will be available at the fair, with additional space a short shuttle ride away. Fair admission is free, and the event will be held rain or shine, so there are few excuses to skip the cultural summer affair.
