The currently vacant fifth floor of the Luther Building will get a $19 million upgrade beginning in February, Mayo Clinic Health System in Eau Claire announced recently. The fifth floor has been vacant since 2010, when the 358,000-square-foot building, the newest part of Mayo’s Eau Claire campus, was built. When complete, the fifth floor will include 40 inpatient rooms, which will replace rooms in older parts of the campus. According to Mayo, the fifth floor’s south wing will be home to the Neuroscience/Pediatrics/Trauma Department, which will have 20 inpatient rooms. The floor’s north wing will have 20 Rapid Discovery and Recovery rooms for patients who are in the hospital less than 48 hours. There will also be space for physical, occupation, and speech therapy. The project will be completely funded through donations, ranging from $5 to $500,000, received over the past three decades. “Many years of community giving has made the completion of the Luther Building possible,” said Randall Linton, M.D., president and CEO of Mayo Clinic Health System for northwest Wisconsin. “Mayo Clinic Health System is extremely grateful for the generosity and support of our benefactors who have partnered with us to meet the health care needs of our community.” Like other inpatient rooms in the Luther Building, these be built for patient comfort, and will offer everything from remote-controlled window shades to wireless Internet. The project is expected to be completed by February 2017.
