It was the first week of June when at the checkout counter of the Birch Street Ace Hardware I was quite excited to see a small cardboard display sitting right behind the credit card swiper – a little box full of those super lightweight wooden airplane kits. I’m talking about the cheap ones, less than three bucks, where the wood is so thin it’s more like a fragile cardboard. With awesome names in vintage typefaces, like the Starfire Glider and Skystreak Airplane, you slide the wings and tail through the body to make a little foot-long flyer that can sail long distances or even do loops. I hadn’t seen one of those planes in decades. Needless to say I immediately grabbed one to bring back and toss around the V1 office. Standing there in the store I was struck, at the age of 35, with what I can only describe as perhaps my first full dose of nostalgia. I immediately felt young, but at the same time, old. And I imagine there’s plenty more of that sensation to come. But in addition to the wistful vibes, it also made me exited about all the cool things I have yet to share with my 2-year-old son. And that is quite a bit of stuff …
