EC Native Makes Friends with Oscar

V1 Staff |

He may not be an A-list Hollywood celeb, but Eau Claire-native Peter W. Anderson got more hardware from the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences this year than Leonardo DiCaprio or Sandra Bullock did. Anderson, a 1960 Eau Claire Memorial grad who also attended UW-Eau Claire for a couple of years, received the Gordon E. Sawyer Award – an honorary Oscar for “technical contributions that have brought credit to the industry” – at the Feb. 15 technical awards ceremony in Beverly Hills, Calif. Unless you’re the kind of moviegoer who sits in the dark and carefully reads all the credits, you likely haven’t heard of Anderson. However, you’re probably familiar with some of his work. Since the 1970s, Anderson has created visual effects for scores of films and TV shows, including Close Encounters of the Third Kind, the original Battlestar Galactica, the first TRON film, Splash, Cocoon, As Good As It Gets, and a host of shorts and 3D films, including U2 3D. “The honor bestowed upon me is an honor by my peers, and that is very powerful,” Anderson told the Leader-Telegram. While he’s semi-retired, Anderson still keeps a hand in the industry: He’s involved in the big-budget Godzilla remake, which will be coming to a theater near you this summer.
