A Feisty Fun Time

over-the-top burlesque ensemble goes for naughty laughs

Super Happy Funtime Burlesque is a professional troupe of actors, singers, dancers and musicians based in Grand Rapids, Mich. Their blush-inducing shows are chock-full of unbelievably bizarre skits fit for seductive dance and music with plenty of props, costume changes, scenery changes, stunts, and audience interaction along the way. Nov. 1 will be the ensemble’s fourth visit to Eau Claire. At past shows, local audiences witnessed scandalous performances featuring mermaids, jungle savages, farmer’s daughters, Egyptian queens, Westboro Baptist Church protestors, and a Buck Rogers-style space drama, just to name a few. The troupe’s live band, The End of Times Orchestra, plays all-original music. Zany like Zappa and twisted like Tom Waits, the band is led by Super Happy Funtime’s mastermind, Corey Ruffin, as the charismatic emcee Mr. Happy Pants. Dressed in a tailcoat suit with dramatic theater makeup like a sideshow’s ringleader, Ruffin’s iconic stage persona carries the night as he gives expositional dialogue, sings, and plays the keyboard, saxophone, and clarinet (sometimes two simultaneously). His charming and perverse delivery matches the heart of this otherwise easily misunderstood ensemble. Let’s be clear here – while at first glance attendees’ thrills are derived at the ends of bare legs and spinning tassels, patrons get their money’s worth in the layers of astonishing comedy and social satire tucked into each sexy scenario. Altogether brilliant and shocking, it will be these moments that separate those who stagger backwards from the naughty rabbit hole, and those who just can’t help themselves.
