Children's Theatre Stages Wacky Irish Wake

Tom Giffey

The beloved Patrick James Finnegan has dropped dead – after winning a casino jackpot, no less – and now its time for his quarrelsome Irish-American family to celebrate with a traditional Irish wake, complete with singing, drinking, and perhaps even a bit of Blarney. You can tag along by buying tickets to Finnegan’s Farewell, an interactive theatrical and dining experience presented by the Eau Claire Children’s Theatre at The Oxford, 1814 Oxford Ave., at 6:30pm June 21-23. The show is similar to ECCT’s annual murder mysteries, except “the person’s already dead when we start this one,” notes ECCT Executive Director Wayne Marek, who directs the half-improvised, half-scripted show. Audience members can mingle with the characters (and join them in traditional Irish songs) while watching the wake and the meal that follows. The $20 tickets include what Marek describes as a “typical Lutheran dead spread” – sandwiches, casseroles, and bars. (Yes, it’s an Irish Catholic family, but the kind Lutheran ladies are lending a hand with the meal.) Paddy’s last will and testament will be read, family skeletons will be exposed, and “Danny Boy” will be sung. It may be a funeral, but any tears you experience are likely to be brought about by laughter. For tickets or more information, call 715-839-8877 or visit ecct.org.
